At last, let go of that bird: Perfection—
that fabulous, mythical creature
caged in your heart all these years—
the one you work so hard to control.
Take her to the window.
Open it wide to the wind.
Watch her take flight into the limitless sky—
her unattainable plumage trailing behind
as you breathe a sigh of relief.
Instead, leave the window open
for the humble sparrow, Mercy
and the constant chickadee, Forgiveness.
They will come every day to eat,
and if your ears are open,
they will fill your room with song.
Do not tire of feeding them—
simple though they seem.
Their fragile bodies
are holding up the world.
