Ever since its beginning, people have come to Madonna House, whether they’ve known it or not, searching for God. But not all their stories are as dramatic as this one:
“Tom,” not his real name, came a number of years ago. Like so many of his generation, he had grown up unchurched, knowing little or nothing about God or religion.
I wish I knew more details about his search for God before coming to Madonna House, but I’ll tell you what I know.
He came from Ontario or Quebec—I forget which—and he had taken a train to Vancouver. He went west, he later told us, in order to find God.
He stayed there for a time, but to his sadness, he did not find God. Deeply disappointed, he decided to return home.
While on the east-bound train, Tom got to chatting with the young woman sitting next to him. Only God could have arranged that meeting. She had been a working guest at Madonna House and was returning for another visit!
When she heard Tom’s story, she told him about Madonna House and invited him to come with her. He did, and it was here that Tom found God.
