One Man’s Scrap, Another Man’s Gold (March 2016)

The poet Christina Rossetti wrote, "I wonder if the sap is stirring yet." In March at Madonna House, there is no question: the sap in the trees is not only stirring but flowing.

When the temperature rises above freezing during the day and falls below freezing at night, some of our men drill holes in the sugar maple trees and put in taps and buckets into which the sap can drip. They then collect the sap and boil it down into maple syrup, a sweet gift from God.

Thank you for the donations you sent to the gift shop, donations which are sold throughout the year—especially during their busy summer season. These items provide money for the poor around the world.

Thank you also for the men’s watches for which the men staff are very grateful.

This time, the gift shop would be especially grateful for any Matryoshka (Russian nesting dolls), which are very popular these days, and for bookends.

We are now well into 2016, the Year of Mercy, and the office wants to say a big thank you for all the lovely calendars you sent. Thanks to your generosity, they now have all they need.

Last month, we mistakenly begged only for 8 ½ by 11 paper that is good on both sides. The office still wants that but can use paper that is good on one side as well.

The handicraft department is asking for white glue for mending library books. Many of the books in our library are old and are falling apart. One of our staff, who has learned some book-binding, has taught others book-mending.

The library is asking for CD boom boxes for use in our dormitories.

As the days get longer and warmer, we hold each one of you in our hearts, you who so faithfully attend to our needs. Let us rejoice in the stirring of spring as we prepare for the Risen Lord.
