He Let You Be Yourself

Fr. Pat was sometimes outrageous. A week of Cana, our family vacation/retreat camp, was beginning. Fr. Pat McNulty and I were part of the host team, and everyone had gathered for the opening meeting. Fr. Pat said, “I hate Cana! I’m only here under obedience!”

I thought, “Oh, no! Now, what?”

Then we went around the room with everyone giving their reasons for coming.

One man said, “I’m so glad you said that, Father. I don’t want to be here either.”

It turned out that he was only there because his wife had persuaded him to come. They were ready to split up, and she saw it as the last chance for their marriage.

I don’t know how it happened but, during that week, this man’s whole life changed, and the marriage changed. Now, many years later, they are still together.

Fr. Pat was my spiritual director. He was so much who he was that it gave you permission to be who you were. He accepted me when I couldn’t accept myself, and he would say, “Live the Madonna House life. The life will teach you. Let it teach you. It will tell you what you need to know. It is enough.” And he was right.

On his 75th birthday, Fr. Pat said, “I’m 75 and it’s the first time my age, my waist [in inches], and my IQ are all the same number!”
