Clothing a Village

by Bill Schroeder. A letter to the staff of St. Joseph’s House and Madonna House:

There is an African saying, "It takes a village to raise a child." Here’s how I re-worked that saying: "If it takes a village to raise a child, then that child can clothe the village from Madonna House."

My wife is a frequent customer of the thrift store at St. Joseph’s House. I’m sure the staff there know her, at least by sight. She is from Mozambique, and we have just returned from a visit to her family in a village in the west-central part of that country.

The baggage allowance on the flights was two suitcases each, and we filled ours mostly with clothes purchased at St. Joe’s for her extended family and others in the village.

Many of the people in that village own only a few pieces of clothing. The dress clothes in particular were well received since few of them could even contemplate purchasing such items.

I am sure you at St. Joe’s and Madonna House are well aware of the service the thrift store provides to the local population, and now you can be aware that the reach of that store extends across the oceans.
