One Man’s Scrap, Another Man’s Gold (July-August 2015)

"The summer sun," as St. Francis of Assisi called it—is shining. As St. Francis also said, "[Even] a single sunbeam is enough to drive away many shadows."

The gardeners are so grateful for your gifts of rubber boots, which are a vast help especially during the summer, their busiest time.

The gardeners have a few other requests: a Brix refractometer, which measures the sugar content of fruits and vegetables to tell if they are ready for harvesting, and also loppers for pruning—especially ones with long handles, and Bone Meal.

Summer is also the busiest time for the gift shop. Thanks to your generosity, it is able to sell your donations and earn money for the poor around the world.

The gift shop still needs marbles (children love them), note cards and stationery, men’s wallets, and pocket knives. In the religious items section, St. Christopher medals and statues of St. Joseph are especially popular.

The office wants to thank you for the white-out and small binder clips you sent them; they don’t need any more at this time.

They would, however, be grateful for some black pens, wooden pencils, and 6-inch rulers. They also need office pencil sharpeners, the kind that are cranked by hand (not electric), all kinds of notebooks, #8 envelopes, and Scotch tape.

Here’s a request from the kitchen to the local people: when you buy individual-size glass bottles of pop or juice (approximately 2-cup-size), would you please save the bottles for us—and also #5 recyclable plastic food containers?

The cleaning department is asking for corn brooms and bar soap.

The schola (choir) director is asking for D strings for a classical guitar. Because of your past generosity, this is the only size she needs at this time.

We assure you of our prayers. May your summer days be joyful ones, and may God bless you for your kindness to us.

In Our Lady of Combermere,
Susanne Stubbs and Mark Schlingerman (July-August 2015)
