One Man’s Scrap, Another Man’s Gold (April 2015)

At Madonna House Combermere, spring doesn’t really come until April, and this year, the Easter Season is also beginning in early April. Two blessings together. As a verse of one of our Easter hymns proclaims, "Every good gift of the year now with its Master returns."

As spring arrives, our gardeners want to say a big thank you for the apple-size plastic balls they received. This time they are asking for women-size rainwear: jackets, pants, and rubber boots. And they still need blood meal and knee pads with Velcro straps for weeding.

As nature awakens, Joanne Weisbeck, the woman who organizes our Cana Colony family retreat camp is looking towards the summer and the cabins and tent where the families will stay. None of them has electricity. Would you be able to send any solar lamps?

Even in April, outdoor work can be cold on the hands; both the farm and maintenance department would be grateful for winter (insulated) work gloves. The farm is also asking for regular work mitts.

Our nurses, who help to keep us well, are asking for vitamin C, Omega-3-fatty acids, telfa or other non-stick dressings, rubbing alcohol, and melatonin.

The kitchen is grateful for the freezer bags you sent, and they tell us they could use more (small and medium size). They also need fly strips.

St. Martha’s office is grateful for the small ¾-inch binder clips you sent. They are in need of still more as the schola (choir) director and the subscription department of Restoration both need some. Also, would any of you be able to send us some #8 envelopes?

The gift shop wants to thank you for the men’s wallets. This time, as they look to their busy summer season, they are asking for coin purses, sets of drinking glasses or tumblers, butter dishes, and marbles for kids.

The cleaning department thanks you for the spray bottles, and now they are asking for sturdy corn brooms for outdoor use.

Daily, food and flowers grow in the earth. We thank God for these and for all he gives us; and we also thank you, our many friends, for your generosity. May God bless you and give you a wonderful Easter season.

In Our Lady of Combermere,
Susanne Stubbs and Mark Schlingerman (April 2015)
