God puts it there,
desire deep down,
a seed burning white hot,
the one true thing, slumbering
in our middle class lives.

Then one day, parting the crust,
heart pierced, desire’s
roots reaching bedrock, our life
broken open and offered revelation …
we step over the dreaded threshold.

And fear disappears
like mists rising sunward
unveiling the great blue heron,
like the virgin’s liminal yes
to God’s one deep and true desire.
