Cast Away Your Fears

by Pope John Paul II.

The greatest proof of God’s love is that he loves us in our human condition, with our weaknesses and needs. Nothing else can explain the mystery of the Cross.

Christ’s love is more powerful than sin and death. St. Paul explains that Christ came to forgive sins and that his love is greater than any sin whatever, greater than my sins and those of anyone else.

This is the Church’s faith. This is the Good News of God’s love, which the Church has proclaimed down the ages and which I proclaim to you today: God loves you with an everlasting love. He loves you in Christ Jesus his Son.

God’s love shows itself in various ways. In particular, God loves us as our Father. The parable of the Prodigal Son expresses this truth very clearly. You remember the moment in the parable when the son comes to his senses and decides to go home?

He sets off to his father’s house. While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with pity. He ran to the boy, clasped him in his arms, and kissed him (Lk 15:20).

This is God’s fatherly love, a love ever ready to forgive, a love anxious to welcome us home.

God’s love for us as our Father is a strong and faithful love, a love full of compassion, a love that allows us to hope for the grace of conversion when we have sinned.

God loves all of you, boundlessly, without distinction. He loves the oldest of you who feel the weight of your years. He loves the sick and those suffering from AIDS and the problems linked to this. He loves the relatives and friends of the sick, those who look after them.

He loves us all with an unconditional, everlasting love.

Cast away your doubts and fears and let God’s compassion draw you to his heart. Open the doors of your heart to our God; he is rich in mercy.

What great love the Father has lavished on us by letting us be called God’s children—which is what we are (1 Jn 3:1). Yes, we are this today and always: children of a loving God!
