Perfect Security

by Catherine Doherty.

We are teetering today on the edge of an abyss. In the background is the threat of terrorism. We are not secure walking the city streets. We are bewildered by the waste of world resources. Wars flare up in almost every part of the world. The security to which the world clings is illusion.

God offers us an insecurity that leads to perfect security. His security begins when we start loving him with our whole heart, our whole mind, and our whole soul, and our neighbor as ourselves.

To love one’s neighbor is the ultimate risk. It may even mean death for my brother’s sake. To love in this way we are given the Holy Spirit.

Christ also tells us to love our enemies. When we obey his command to love as he loved us, we have the power, the grace, and the charisms to change enemies into beloved neighbors and friends.

All this sounds very idealistic, but Christ assures us it is attainable. Through little steps taken day after day, we can slowly accept the other as he or she is and begin to love totally, tenderly, and compassionately.
