André became quadriplegic after an accident in 1989. For that story, see the November and December 2008 issues.
People sometimes ask us how we were able to pass on the faith to our children. All four of them, who are now young adults, have remained in the Church.
In order to pass on the faith, we talked to them about it, of course, taught them catechism, and prayed with them, and they attended Mass and so forth. But if they choose to remain in the Church now, I think it’s because they saw that we were desperately weak but that God sustained and lifted us up. It was obvious that on our own we were easily discouraged and devastated.
Often parents succeed in hiding their difficulties, but we weren’t able to do that. Our children experienced God through our weaknesses. They saw us devastated by the accident, but they also saw that the life and the peace we experienced later on did not come from us. It was beyond our power and they knew that. So it was obvious to them that the resurrection in our life came solely from the Lord. We think the reason they are in the Church is as simple as that.
