A Christmas Homily

by St. Francis of Assisi.

God has revealed the very depths of his being. In him there is not only power, sovereignty, knowledge, and majesty. Yes, my friends, God is childhood and tenderness. And he is that because he is Father. Infinite Father. People did not know the extent to which God was a Father. It was impossible for them to know. God had to show them his Son.

Alas, people have forgotten. Hardhearted people have no use for God’s humanity and tenderness. It is a reproach for them. They don’t understand it. They don’t even see it. They keep imagining that greatness lies in domination and power. Poor mankind. True greatness, the only true greatness, my brethren, is to be filled with true love, to be like the Father.

That true greatness is always threatened…. That undying animal urge, the will to dominate and to devour, to be the strongest and the most powerful, keeps reawakening in every one of us.

But let us cease fearing…. This little Child is the Savior of the world. We’re never alone any longer, never abandoned in our faults, in our shame and despair. Nothing can separate us anymore from the Father’s tenderness.
