Lucky Children of God

by Fr. Eddie Doherty.

October died a couple of days ago. It passed away quietly in its sleep, and its crib was given to November. Today the snow is falling and people are praying for the souls in purgatory. It is the month to pray for the souls of those departed.

Death is a natural thing. But it’s also natural that we don’t want to die—at least not right now. Even the saints don’t want to die too soon, no matter how eager they may be to climb God’s holy mountain.

Death is inevitable, of course. We shall all die. I will die and so will you. Everybody around us and about us has died, is dying, or will die. God has made death so that he could give us eternal life.

Only through dying can anyone get to heaven. Only by dying can anyone attain undying joy. Priests, especially our Madonna House priests, bless every graveyard they pass by. One of them hails the dead in words of joy. "Keep shining in glory, you lucky children of the Lord!"
