Right from the Lips of Jesus

by Fr. Bob Wild.

One day, just before I began preparing my homily, I asked Mary for a word. The word I heard in my heart was this: “Tell them that if they are searching for a way to understand the Scriptures, before they begin to meditate, to enter my heart and I will teach them.”

Consider this: We only have a limited number of the words of Jesus in the Gospels, very few really. But Mary heard the first words of Jesus, and the last, and she heard thousands and thousands of words from his lips all during his lifetime. In Mary’s heart are thousands of meditations right from the lips of Jesus.

Imagine the life in Nazareth. Jesus must have often rehearsed with his parents what he was going to say publicly. Mary had those words to meditate on, and she had all those years in Nazareth to think about all the things that one day would be in the Gospel.

Anything at all that Jesus said must have entered into Mary’s heart. And her Immaculate Heart was transparent to God’s grace; unlike the case with us, there were no obstacles to her understanding.

If you want to know what sin is or why Jesus had to suffer so much, enter Mary’s heart. Because of her very purity, she knows what sin is more than any living human being. So with all the words of Scripture. She can translate for us, amplify for us, clarify for us, the Word of God.

Who knows and understands the Word of God better than Mary does? Who could be a better teacher?
