People have traditionally begun religious life in the novitiate, an initial period of exclusively spiritual formation. The Vatican has recently proposed that men preparing for the priesthood undergo a time of spiritual formation also, before beginning studies in the seminary.
Under the inspiration of Catherine Doherty, our foundress, and in response to the call of the Vatican, Madonna House has offered a program of spiritual formation for men interested in the priesthood since 1980. We seek to give you, the participant, a “good taste” of prayer, work, silence, daily liturgy, spiritual direction, simplicity of life, and service to one another. The goal is that you develop a deeper personal relationship with the Lord. With him as your center, you will be better able to clarify and solidify your vocation, better able to hear his voice.
The Chambers of Her Heart describes the history and development of our program, the matieral and activities offered, and places it in the context of Madonna House spirituality, training and community life. Also included are comments from a number of men who have participated in the program and directors of formation who know them.
Fr. Robert Wild is a priest of Madonna House and lives as a poustinik. Having published a number of his own books, he helped in the editing of Catherine Doherty's early works and now serves as Postulator for her cause for canonization. Fr. Wild was ordained a priest in the Diocese of Buffalo in 1967, and had experience as both a Trappist and as a Carthusian before ordination.
