The Paintings of Patrick Stewart

Photo: Patrick Stewart paintingI love to paint, and that is why I paint. I am grateful beyond words to God for this gift of art in my life. And I am grateful also that my apostolic call within Madonna House holds a place for this.

I read something recently from Flannery O'Connor, a Catholic American fiction writer, that really resonated with my heart and mind. She's talking about the fiction writer in the original context, but I am going to insert “artist” in its place to help make my point.

“The [artist] is an observer, first, last and always, but he cannot be an adequate observer unless he is free from uncertainty about what he sees. Those who have no absolute values cannot let the relative remain merely relative; they are always raising it to the level of the absolute. The Catholic [artist] is entirely free to observe. He feels no call to take on the duties of God or to create a new universe. He feels perfectly free to look at the one we already have and to show exactly what he sees.” (Flannery O'Connor, Mystery and Manners)
